Before the start of the City Council meeting, City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas welcomed students from United ISD’s Alexander High School’s Healthcare Occupation Students Association, to proclaim the week HOSA Week in Laredo.  The students have a week-long of activities designed to help encourage them to continue studying and pursue a career in the healthcare profession.

Once the City Council meeting started, Mayor Salinas and the Laredo City Council recognized Arby’s Restaurant of Laredo for their nomination by the Texas Workforce Commission as Employer of the Year.  Earlier in the year, the only Arby’s restaurant in town suffered a massive fire that not only required shutting the facility for repairs, it also displace countless workers who would be left without a job while the repairs were completed.  Arby’s teamed up with the City of Laredo to provide volunteers for various City projects, while continuing to pay the wages to their employees during the three months of reconstruction on the restaurant.  Pictured here with Salinas and Council are David Mitchell, operations manager for the restaurant and Jose Luis Padron, the general manager of another new Arby’s restaurant set to open.

Anselmo “Chemo” Castro, President of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association (WBCA), and his executive staff, presented Mayor Salinas and members of the Laredo City Council each with an framed poster of the 2010 WBCA poster.

Finally, Trey Ausin, TAMIU Assistant Director for Sports Information invited Mayor Salinas, the Laredo City Council and the entire Laredo community to come out and witness next week’s annual Guns and Hoses basketball game at TAMIU, a charity basketball game which will pit the Laredo Police Department versus the Laredo Fire Department to benefit TAMIU student athletes.
