City of Laredo Council District 1
At last night’s City Council meeting, Mayor Raul G. Salinas and the Laredo City Council welcomed more outstanding citizens into Council Chambers to recognize them for their accomplishments in our community.
A representative from HEB was on hand, receiving kudos from Salinas on their annual Feast of Sharing Thanksgiving dinner, which feeds homeless, the elderly and anyone else in line, relying on hundreds of volunteers and sponsors to make it such a successful event.
Later, the young J.S. Arndt Elementary School Cardinals soccer team was praised for going undefeated in the 2009 season and winning the championship game last month.
The Laredo Reads Committee made a brief presentation before the City Council, highlighting the committee’s plan of action to help promote Laredo as a literate community in hopes of attracting a bookstore to Laredo. Citizens are encouraged to visit www.laredoreads.com and sign the petition or to visit the Laredo Public Library to sign the petition.
Finally, the 5th Annual HEB Holiday Bowl Champs were crowned, as well, much to the disappointment of Council Member Gene Belmares and the rest of the City of Laredo, as this year, the Media walked away with a 40-36 victory. However, the trash-talking was all in jest and all commended how the whole point of the game, win or lose, was to raise toys for needy children for the Laredo Police Department’s Blue Santa program.
